MAFFF LIVESTOCK DIVISION

The vision of the Livestock Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries (MAFFF) regarding all animal species in Tonga is to improve their wellbeing and safety through promotion and conducting awareness programmes to the public, and providing advice and educating animal owners on better animal care and treatment, animal security and safety during disasters, ensuring that the animals are fed, watered and looked after well and  providing them with a safe, resilient and sustainable environment. The Livestock Division also needs tighter, strict border control to prevent importing zoonotic diseases through meat imports that might affect the local animal population and humans like Salmonellosis and other infectious diseases that will wipe out the animal population of pigs if the African Swine Fever reaches our shores.

The Division provides animal care to all animal species in Tonga. It has a “care team” that visits and treats animals in their homes weekly.

South Pacific Animal Welfare (SPAW) is a NZ based charity which has been working in close partnership with the Livestock Section (MAFFF) since 2010.
